VDE
Eric Meyer's VDE is a small, fast text editor and word processor that is surprisingly powerful and customizable. It runs under DOSes and DOS shells, including DesqVIEW (which it recognizes) and Windows 3.x / 9x / Me / NT / 2000 / XP. It can read and edit files in a variety of formats: ASCII, ANSI, Wordstar, WordPerfect, XYWrite, Word and others. VDE runs even on older PCs, including XTs, and supports the HP LX series palmtops.
VDE is not an orphan, as many fine DOS programs unfortunately are, but is still being maintained by its original author.
In addition to several versions of the VDE program itself - each packaged with installation utility, sample macros, and documentation - you will find on the Mostly VDE Page a number of add-ons, by Eric Meyer and others, that perform specialized tasks.
With the release on 4 Dec 2002 of version 1.93D, VDE is no longer a shareware program, but is now freeware. VDE remains copyrighted by its author, but users no longer need pay any registration / licensing fees. The spelling checker, and direct support provided by the author in return for payment of fees, also pass from the scene. But note that other support is available through the VDE email discussion list -- See Links / More Sources, on the Mostly VDE Page, for signup details.

Pegasus Mail
Pegasus Mail (PMail), by David Harris, is a powerful and flexible emailer that can run on a direct Internet connection or on a network. Setup requires serious attention, but we think the payoff is worth it: PMail supports multiple users, multiple address books, and multiple mail distribution lists. It has excellent Internet security, spam filtering, multiple sorting options, macro capability, and many more unique and useful features.
Languages / character sets supported include Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish.
There are PMail versions for DOS and for 16- and 32-bit Windows. Of particular interest to us is the fact that the DOS version can be configured to use VDE as its default message editor.
Pegasus Mail is free, but if you pay a small registration fee to the author, you will get the full manual for your chosen version, and support.

This page was written in VDE and uploaded with WS_FTP. It is designed to be readable in 16-bit browsers and on small 640X480 monitors displaying 16 colors. Fancier equipment will show more thrilling design details, but is still not absolutely necessary.
